Betel Vine - Piper betel

Betel vine is a species in the same family as black pepper, rootbeer plant and kava. Culinarily, it has uses as a wrapper for steamed and grilled foods, and can be added to dishes as it lends a peppery flavor. Older leaves are better wraps, tender growth is better to add to dishes. Betel is also used as a wrap for areca betel nuts- a stimlant used in South and Southeast Asia.  

Although many sources claim this is a zone 10 plant, its preference for part shade makes it reasonably well adapted to zone 9 as well. Betel's growth habit is halfway between a vine and groundcover, and is much more manageable when maintained on a trellis or other structure.
