Comfrey is an interesting rosette forming herb thats happy to grow in near full to dappled shade in our climate provided  good airflow is accounted for in the rainy months. With a myriad of traditional folk medicinal uses as well as occasional vegetable uses in the past, nowadays comfreys generally relegated to occasional external herbal uses as well as other more utility purposes due to indications it may be slightly toxic when taken internally - that doesn't mean its not worth adding to your garden.

In more northern climes, comfrey is regaled by the permaculture community as a dynamic accumulation superstar when interplanted with perennial food crops due to its much more vigorous (to the point of potentially invasive) growth habit- its deep growing roots "mine" minerals and nutrients from the surrounding soil and its leaves can be harvested as a nutrient source and either treated as a chop and drop style fertilizer or a fermented leaf tea (a comfrey leaf and worm casting tea is how we utilize this species here 99% of the time).

Although central FL is about the most extreme southern range that this species is feasible, some considerations need to be taken: comfrey has fuzzy leaves that can hold onto moisture a little too efficiently during our rainy season so planting location needs to be accounted for- our best growing plants are always in an area that gets dappled to heavy shade until the afternoon where they get full sun a few hours, this allows them to dry out before dusk and seems to work well. Also, more northern advice suggests planting in very poor soil areas - our plants that were planted in pure native sandhill soil certainly lived but never thrived. Plants that were put out in short raised beds of mostly sand and some compost thrived in comparison.

The most desirable and requested cultivar of comfrey is 'Bocking 14' which is seed sterile. Over the years we've obtained a few different varieties but none truly thrived like this one we are offering which is more than likely Bocking as in nearly 13 years of growing we've never had seed set nor the plants spread beyond their own expanding root mass (which can be divided, and how the plants we offer are produced) so for the sake of accuracy we are offering it as a non spreading type not under a specific cultivar name.
