Gotu Kola, XL leaf variety - Hydrocotyle asiatica 'Major'

Gotu Kola is a low growing ground cover type species with round edible vitamin and mineral rich leaves, as well as a long list of traditional uses, deserves a spot in your food forest that stays constantly moist. Will readily grow in shade (or sun if kept in nearly inundated soil) this species is native mainly to Southeast Asia, and some argue its also native to Central America up into the US south, including Florida. Regardless of its native status this is an easy grower in all of the state as long as soil is kept moist - in areas like our location this means its relegated to container culture where it thrives as well, appearing quite ornamental as it spills and runs over the side of containers or hanging baskets. The variety 'Major' we are offering has considerably large leaves than wild varieties, with leaves growing over silver dollar size when well grown.
Although it might seem to make more sense to forage this species due to its wild establishment in FL instead of cultivate, its been suggested as a tool to phytoremediate metals from soil in which is grows, so location needs to be well researched and tested before consuming from the wild- a good reason to grow your own in a controlled manner. While largely safe to use as an occasional potherb or vegetable, consuming large quantities or using as a regular supplement should be discussed with a health professional before consistent consumption.
